The βDave Gilmour Black Stratβ project
Iβve always loved the sound and look of Dave Gilmourβs black strat.
Fender Custom shop did a limited run on a reissue version. These now go for anywhere from $14-25k on reverb.
So, Iβve tried to recreate a more cost-effective version. And itβs gone through some changes sinceβ¦
First, I bought an American deluxe black strat. Mint condition. Maple board, locking tuners etc. Had a green pickguard with (some quite nice sounding) N3 noiseless pickups installed.
I then imported from the USA a recreation of the Gilmour black strat wiring/ pickups/ pickguard etc. from Overdrive custom guitar works. This included the unique wiring and extra
2-way switch which the black strat has. Also, the identical Custom β69/ Fat β50s and upgraded SSL-IC DG RW/RP pickups to the original (and a bunch of other stuff- see list in photos). This all cost around $1200 NZD landed and installed.
This got the guitar sounding fabulously like the DG versionβ¦.but unfortunately my limited talent did not get me sounding like the man himselfβ¦
So, after I while I swapped out the DG pickups for some Epic Klein 59βs. Again, a sweet sound. ($313 NZD plus install)
And then I swapped out the bridge pickup for a (single coil sized, so no routing of the body of the guitar) Hot rails humbucker, to give the bridge a bit more grunt and turn it into a
SSH-style strat.
And thatβs where it currently is.
Great guitar. Looks amazing.
Iβll include all the pickups (N3s plus pickguard/ DGs x 3 from Overdrive custom/ Epics) so new owner can choose which sound they want; Hard case obviously included.
Will also include the Gilmour βLive at Pompeiβ double CD as a bonus.
Happy to ship at ownerβs risk.
