How to Write a Cover Letter for South African Jobs

If a South African job application asks for a cover letter, you should absolutely send one - because a strong cover letter helps employers quickly understand who you are, why you want the role, and why you’re a good fit before they even open your CV. A good cover letter is short, tailored to the job, and focused on matching your experience and skills to what the employer is actually looking for. It should introduce you professionally, highlight your most relevant strengths, and end with a clear, confident call to action.

When You Need a Cover Letter

If the job ad asks for one, include one. If the ad does not mention it, include one anyway. The only exception is when the application form explicitly says "do not attach additional documents." In every other case, a cover letter gives you an edge.

The Right Structure

Opening Paragraph

State the role you are applying for and where you saw the ad. If someone referred you, mention their name. Get to the point. "I am writing to apply for the Senior Accountant position advertised on VulaMart" is clean and direct.

Middle Paragraph (The Hook)

This is where you sell yourself. Pick two or three requirements from the job ad and show how your experience matches. Use specific examples. "In my current role at [Company], I manage a team of five and reduced reporting turnaround time by 40%" is concrete and relevant.

Closing Paragraph

Express your interest in the role and the company. Say you are available for an interview at their convenience. Thank them for considering your application. Include your phone number again for easy reference.

Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

Do not rewrite your CV in paragraph form. The cover letter should add context, not repeat information. Do not use a template without changing the company name and role. HR managers spot generic letters instantly.

Do not write more than one page. Three to four paragraphs is the sweet spot. Respect the reader’s time.

A Simple Template to Start With

[Your Name]

[Your Email] | [Your Phone]

[Date]

[Hiring Manager’s Name / HR Department]

[Company Name]

Dear [Name / Hiring Manager],

I am writing to apply for the [Job Title] position advertised on [Platform]. With [X years] of experience in [relevant field], I am confident I can contribute to [Company Name]’s goals.

[Middle paragraph with 2-3 matched examples from your experience.]

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background aligns with this role. I am available for an interview at your convenience and can be reached at [phone number]. Thank you for considering my application.

Kind regards,
